Gift Set To Sew For A Student | Free Patterns
This set of items is great to sew for a student. A tote bag to carry their stuff back and forth to school, a laptop sleeve to protect their device, a pencil case, glasses case, and book sleeve so they have their favourite book to read between classes.
If you want to add items to this gift set, you could buy:
- Gift card to their local coffee shop or pizza joint
- Stationery (notebooks, pens, pencils, highlighters, etc.)
- Portable power banks (to recharge their devices) or other electronic devices
- Reusable water bottle or coffee mug
If they like to pack their lunches, you could also sew a matching reusable lunch bag, snack bags, and a cutlery roll:

These sewing projects range from beginner to intermediate. The more challenging aspects of some of the patterns are working with binding and zippers. However, these details also give these items a unique look and make them feel more gift-worthy.
Many of them don’t require printed patterns, but rather just to follow the pattern dimensions to cut out your rectangular pieces.

Flat-Bottom Tote Bag
This tote bag is quilted to give it a cozy feel, add padding for a little more protection for the items inside, and to add some structure to the bag.
It also has a flat bottom, which will help it sit up when it’s set down, and it creates a little more room in the bag.
I love the detailed look of the binding-finished edges on the handles and around the top of the bag.
Inside, I added one pocket, but you can add as many as you like for more organization.
It’s big enough to fit the laptop sleeve in this gift set.
Quilted Laptop Sleeve
The interior size of this laptop case is 16″ wide by 10-1/2″ tall, so it should be big enough to fit most laptops. And if it’s on the bigger side, it leaves room for a notebook, textbook, or pencil case to fit inside.
The padding helps create the quilted look and adds some protection for the laptop inside. It has a snap closure, but alternatively, you could use velcro, a magnetic closure, or ties.
A padded laptop sleeve is a great item for a student who carries their laptop back and forth to classes.
Book Sleeve with Bow Closure
I love the look of this book sleeve. The wide ties create a big bow when tied, which gives the sleeve a feminine look.
It will protect a book from the cover getting bent and the pages getting torn. It’s great for the person who always loves to have a book in their bag to read between classes or on lunch breaks.
The size of this pattern fits snuggly around my book that is 6″ x 9″ with about a 1″ wide spine. However, this pattern is easy to adjust to make the book sleeve bigger or smaller.
Drawstring Glasses Case
This is a simple item to sew and it’s always fun to have a glasses case that matches the bag.
Even if the gift recipient doesn’t require glasses to see to the front of the class, or reading glasses for studying, this case can be used for sunglasses (which most of us have one too many pairs of).
It’s the most beginner-friendly sewing project in this set, uses up scraps of fabric, and is quick to sew.
You can add batting and quilting stitches to the outer layer if you want to keep with the quilted look.
Quilted Pencil Case
I love the details on this pencil case. Although it does require a little more skill to work with the zipper and the binding, it does make the project easier in some aspects because the binding-finished edges allow you to work with the outer material, batting, and lining as one layer.
Another sewing project that’s great for using smaller pieces of leftover fabric.
It’s the perfect size to carry a few pens, a pencil, an eraser, and a highlighter. However, it’s easy to adjust the dimensions to create a bigger pencil case for a student who needs to carry more stationery (e.g. an art student).
You may also adjust the size of this case if you think it might be used for something other than pens and pencils. Make it slightly larger, and it would be perfect as a little makeup case.
