8 Cozies to Sew | Free Printable Sewing Patterns

Cozies are a popular item to sew, either for yourself, to give as a gift, or to sell at craft fairs.

I started with a bowl cozy, realized how convenient it was, and then started developing patterns for other cozies.

So this article gathers all my “cozy” sewing patterns in one place, so you can see what I have available.

Some are beginner-friendly, while others are a little more advanced. But every sewist should be able to find something to fit their skill level.

Bowl Cozy

This is by far my most popular cozy sewing pattern. I designed this pattern to be a different shape and style than the others out there. I prefer the curved top edge over the points and I like the detail the bias tape adds to the top edge. It’s slightly taller on the ends, so it wraps over the top of the bowl.

If you don’t want to work with the bias tape, try my beginner bowl cozy.

Beginner Bowl Cozy

This is the same shape as my regular bowl cozy, but it skips the bias tape to finish the top edge and uses the “birthing” method.

These are quick and easy to sew and make a great gift for someone who might eat a lot of meals on the couch.

9 x 13 Casserole Cozy

This style is similar to my bowl cozy, with the top edge finished with bias tape. I love the extra detail it adds, especially if you use a contrasting or coordinating material for the bias tape (here’s how to make your own in any fabric).

Square Casserole Cozy

After the rectangular casserole cozy sewing pattern was so popular, I decided to make a pattern for a square dish. Be sure to check the pattern size with your dishes, to ensure they’ll fit before cutting out your material.

Mug Cozy

This pattern is unique. Every pattern for a mug cozy I found was the sleeve shape with an elastic loop and a button. I wanted to come up with something different.

Although this style of mug cozy requires a little extra work, I like how it creates more insulation to keep the coffee/tea warm longer, and it has a built-in coaster.

Ice Cream Pint Cozy

This pattern is a little more advanced, mainly due to the bias tape. However, I’ve included tips in the article to make the pattern a bit more beginner-friendly.

Again, I wanted to have a clean top edge, rather than the points.

Teapot Cozy

This sewing project offers two sizes, which should fit most 2-cup teapots and 4-cup teapots.

The tie closure makes it adjustable, so it should fit most shapes and wrap tightly around the teapot to keep the contents warm. I like how this style allows you to keep the cozy on while you pour the tea, and has a built-in hot pad to protect the table’s surface.

Plate Cozy

Similar to the bowl cozy, this is a handy kitchen item for the person who often reheats leftovers in the microwave. It can go into the microwave as long as you use 100% cotton materials. Then you don’t burn your hands when removing the hot plate from the microwave.

It also protects your hands if you don’t sit at a table and are holding the plate as you eat, or it protects the table and acts as a placemat.

Pie Plate Cozy

This is a great gift for the baker. Or someone who loves to cook quiches for Sunday brunches. The pie can come right out of the oven and into the cozy, which will protect a counter or table from the hot dish, keep the pie warm, and protect your hands when carrying it to the table or passing it around.
