Free Sewing Patterns for Casserole, Bowl & Pie Cozies

Cozies (bowl, casserole, pie, etc.) were one of those things I didn’t really understand until I made one. Now I find them so handy.

I love casserole & pie cozies for keeping food warm and making it easy to serve hot dishes at the dinner table. No need to bring a hot pad and oven mitts; a cozy is all-in-one.

And microwavable bowl cozies make taking hot dishes out of the microwave so much easier. And eating hot bowls of food on my couch (which happens far too often) is much more comfortable.

I’ve created this set of free patterns in case you love cozies as much as I do. Or if you want to start selling cozies at craft shows.

I’ve included a link to each individual pattern, material list, and written instructions below each video.

Sewing cozies to sell

Cozies may require a little more explaining to sell. Once people are aware of their purpose and benefits, they’re much more interested in them.

Here are some selling points to communicate to shoppers:

  • You can take a casserole or pie out of an oven and set it into the cozy; no need to set down a hot pad.
  • You can bring the casserole or pie dish, in its cozy, straight to the table, without having a pair of oven mitts hanging out on the table while you eat.
  • It takes up less room on the dining table because it’s basically like a hot pad that fits snugly around the casserole dish.
  • It keeps the dish warmer, longer when on the dining room table.
  • You can pass a hot casserole dish around the table (and no one burns their hands).
  • I also like to use it when I need to place a casserole dish into the fridge before it’s cooled. I previously placed an oven mitt under my casserole dishes (to protect my fridge shelves from the heat).
  • A microwavable bowl cozy ensures you don’t burn your hands (and spill your food) when taking a hot dish out of the microwave.
  • You can eat a hot bowl of soup or a cold bowl of ice cream on the couch without burning or freezing your hands.

Because it’s not a common household product, test the waters before investing a lot of time and money into making cozies to sell. If they’re popular at your next craft show or in your Etsy shop, make more.

Cozies can be a little more labour-intensive, and with the layers of batting, material costs can also add up. So set a price that ensures you profit and that your target market is willing to pay that price.

Please note

*A cozy is NOT microwave safe unless you use 100% cotton materials for all aspects of the cozy (thread, batting, fabric, bias tape). I did not create my casserole and pie plate cozies to be microwavable.

The instructions to sew the rectangular casserole cozy, square casserole cozy, and pie plate cozy are all the same. Please follow the video below:
