Free Lunch Bag Set Sewing Patterns

Free printable patterns for a reusable lunch set

This is a perfect set of products to sell together at craft shows or online. They also make a great gift set.

You can reduce the cost of these items by using a cotton lining instead of food-safe PUL. In which case, it may be best to choose a darker or patterned fabric so it hides food stains.

Tips for selling these items

If you’re going to add these items to your product line, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Product cohesion

Make sure they work with the other products in your line (if you have an existing line). You don’t want to sell a lunch bag next to hair accessories, as those items don’t make sense together. Your product line should follow a theme, and ideally, stick to one product category or subcategory (this article explains why). This will:

  • Encourage multi-item sales
  • Create repeat customers
  • Build a strong brand
  • Position yourself as an expert (and experts can charge more)

Think about the customer you’re targeting. For example, it may be an eco-conscious consumer who wants to reduce food waste. Then think about the other products they would be interested in buying, or would use with the products they’re buying. The eco-conscious consumer buying reusable snack bags may also be interested in reusable bowl covers, casserole covers, or measuring cup covers.

Try to stick to a theme.

Coordinating

A common mistake I see sewing businesses make (and one I made too), is to make their products in a wide range of colors and patterns. My mindset, when I did this, was to try and appeal to more shoppers.

But it ends up creating a disjointed product line, which makes it hard to create a cohesive and visually attractive craft show display or online shop.

Think about the brands you love. Do they have one or two items that fit your style, or is their entire shop filled with items you love?

Getting clear on who you’re targeting, and their preferences (when it comes to style/color/prints/etc.) and then creating a line of products that appeal to those preferences will build a strong, recognizable brand that your customers fall in love with and are loyal to.

Make sure that you offer these three pieces in coordinating or matching colors, so customers can buy a matching set.

If you want to offer more color/print options, then create collections. Don’t try to appeal to every color and print preference. Instead, create collections that appeal to a common preference. For example, a neutral collection, a pastel collection, and an earthtone collection. Stick to 3 – 5 colors or prints within those collections, and that will make your line look more cohesive.

As you grow your business and start to understand your target market, develop your brand, and have sales stats to tell you popular colors/prints, then you can hone in on a specific style. For example, you may always stick to earthtone colors and organic, nature-inspired fabric prints.

Pricing

It’s important to properly calculate the prices of your products to ensure you’re covering all your costs and wages, and earning a profit. If I give you a price to set your products at, but your materials are more expensive than mine, you could be selling a product at a price that only earns your money back, or worse yet, leaves you with a loss.

However, it is important to keep your prices competitive. So here are some rough guidelines for pricing.

  • Lunch Bag – For a lined paper-bag-style lunch bag (handmade), the average price range appears to be:
    • $20 – $35
  • Reusable Snack Bags – For a fold-over snack bag with food-safe PUL lining, an acceptable price range would be:
    • $8 – $12 (small – large)
    • $25 for a set (small, medium, and large)
  • Cutlery roll – Many handmade cutlery rolls on the market are a simpler design than this pattern, and most don’t use food-safe PUL for the lining. So you can reduce your costs and price by using a cotton lining and/or skipping the zipper pocket (you could do a simple open pocket that a napkin can slide into). A good price range to be in is:
    • $25 – $35

If you can keep your prices within those ranges, or close to, you should have competitive pricing. Of course, many factors, such as material choice, branding, target market, expertise, etc., will allow you to charge higher-than-average prices, or may require you to reduce costs so you can offer lower prices.
